Falls prevention design considerations for senior living communities

Safety and falls prevention are a top priority when designing senior living communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year, resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. In fact, falls are the No. 1 cause of accidental deaths in seniors — more than every other cause combined.

U.S. median age reaches record high, underscoring need for long term care access

Median age in the country reached a record high of 38.9 years, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, and is only expected to increase.

Access to long term care is more important than ever, as the long term care sector is facing historic labor shortages. Nursing homes disproportionately lost more workers than any other health care sector during the pandemic – more than 200,000 – and facilities are still struggling to rebuild.
