Blog | July 24, 2025 Technology Expectations of Seniors A recent webinar hosted by McKnight’s and presented by MatrixCare delved into the technological expectations of residents and their families within long-term care facilities. Today’s residents are significantly more “tech-savvy” compared to previous generations, regularly using smartphones, tablets, wearables, and various applications in their daily routines. Consequently, when considering potential senior living options, technology plays a central role in the decision-making process. The presenters highlighted the need for providers to adapt operations with technological solutions to meet resident and family expectations, such as real-time status updates, data-driven decision-making, personalized resident experiences, and involving families as care partners. MatrixCare describes use of such technology as a “digital safety net,” which includes: Engagement Tools to digitally connect residents, families, and staff, including patient portals, mobile health apps, health bots, voice assistants (medication and appointment reminders, emergency alerts), and caregiver communication hubs. Telehealth to expand access and support aging in place. Ambient monitoring to provide non-intrusive insights, including private, around-the-clock monitoring to address resident needs early, allow for proactive changes to care plans, and provide families with peace of mind. Today’s seniors value independence, meaningful connections, purpose, and physical and mental wellness. Investing in these digital technologies allows providers to support these values along with realizing a clinical and competitive advantage in the senior-living marketplace. The digital safety net ultimately improves the quality of care, reduces costs, and increases resident and family satisfaction. Excelas continues to monitor technology trends in senior living and the impact on documentation, quality, compliance, claims, and litigation.
